Warrior Truth: There is a season (a time appointed) for everything and a time for every delight and event or purpose under heaven –“ Ecclesiastes 3 v 1 (AMP)
As this truth settled this week, the words I found myself initially drawn to were season and time. Look up the definition of season (as a noun) and you will likely get some variation of the following:
- each of the four divisions of the year (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) marked by particular weather patterns and daylight hours, resulting from the earth’s changing position with regard to the sun.
- a set or sequence of related television programmes; a series.
In the natural world, we know and expect the seasons to change. Depending on where we live, those changes differ in intensity from one zone to the next. Live somewhere long enough, and you know what to expect from the weather and available daylight hours. We love different seasons for different reasons and even if one season is a favourite, there is always something we can appreciate or take delight in within every season. With our winter approaching, the hours of daylight are reducing, the temperatures dropping, and our rainfall is increasing (for the Western Cape at least). As I brace for what feels like it will be a chilly winter, I look forward to the delight of evenings spent in front of a fire, and also find myself recognising seasonal shifts in my life as well.
I am in a challenging season right now from a work and life perspective – for a variety of reasons. As I read on in Ecclesiastes, the words and emotions expressed really resonated. I can relate to what Solomon must have been feeling as he penned those words. The internal dialogue on work, purpose and worth has intensified in this season as I face old narratives delivered through new experiences and channels.
Warrior Tools: But, intertwined with the emotion and the definition, are tools to finding delight even in this winter season. Solomon goes on in the chapter to note that we can expect to ‘see and enjoy the good’ of our labour. Being able to celebrate the good, is God’s design and His gift to us. Celebrating the good helps us stay the course and balance out the ups and downs our emotions often bring, both for ourselves and others.
And in celebrating the good, there is something else we can do to find delight in every season. It is our position to the Son in each season that will shape how brightly we shine.
Prayer: Thank you Lord that seasons do not determine our purpose, but rather help us build our purpose-driven life. Thank you thank you have planted eternity in our hearts. In every season, help us see the good you have for us. Help us take delight in the season we find ourselves in and the tasks you give us, so that we might reflect you as we live out our purpose. Amen.
